Can I blame Science & Technology?

I watched this video today morning. I was actually scared. I am sure many would blame the technology and science for this. I find this as a problem of we (homo sapiens) being willing allow others (in this case a machine to take decisions).

Daniel Suarez (the speaker) is a novelist. He spoke about something which looked almost like spine chilling scientific horror movie. he was speaking about “the rise of autonomous robotic weapons of war” . Advanced drones, automated weapons and AI-powered intelligence-gathering tools have potential to make life miserable beyond the control of people. Interestingly there are many civilized usage of this technology, but has been used as Automated Weapon. He also claims that this is already in use. On goggle search I found that that is a reality (http://newlaunches.com/archives/samsung_develops_machine_gun_sentry_robot_costs_200k.php)

This sounds crazy and the impact of this can have multifold impact in a society which is already going through tough phase in terms of ability hold society together.

On a careful think I also realize that this is not the first time. There are many technological products that have been first used for military purpose. Some of the best examples are

  1. Percy Spencer invented the first microwave oven after World War II from radar technology developed during the war. Named the “Radarange”, it was first sold in 1947. The source was a technology used in war.
  2. THE earliest computers were used to crack codes and simulate nuclear explosions.
  3. The internet grew out of a military research project. (I could not have posted this without Internet)
  4. In-car navigation systems rely on satellites that were put into orbit to guide ships, troops and missiles.
  5. The Boeing 747, with its raised cockpit, was designed as a military transporter.

One reason why this happens is because Military is always a major consumer of investment the kingdoms have made to protect and expand their territory. Earlier it was in form of castles and animals (horses and elephants) now it is technology.

I see many organisations are alos working on bring more and more AI and Neural Network based system in use. Often they are seen as a substitute for decision making by the  users, that is also because often the communication from buyers (decision maker) relates lesser usage of people in process rather than positioning it an people empowerment tool or a training tool to upgrade skills of decision making.
