Are you decisive?

Every living being in this universe make decisions. Whether you are a frog in the well or king of a nation, you have to make decision.

I read  something interesting in a book (Management Sutras) by Devdutt Pattanaik.

Animals take decisions all the time.
Only humans have the option not to take decisions.

Many of us would remember the famous childhood stories of Vikramaditya and Betal. The stories had a pattern. Follow the link to know more about Vikram and Betal

  1. Vikramaditya (King) carries a Betal (Ghost) on his shoulder from the top of the tree.
  2. The Betal narrates a story
  3. At the end of the story , Betal asks him a question which involves Vikramitya to decide to respond or not to respond
  4. As a king and his wisdom he must respond, but the Betal goes back to the tree
  5. The journey begins again.
Vikram Aur Betaal is based on 'Betaal Pachisi', written in the 11th century by Kashmiri poet Somdev Bhatt. These are spellbinding stories told to the wise King Vikramaditya by the witty ghost Betaal.

If you are a king you cannot escape decision making. The leaders of the organisation are today’s kings.  Vikram-Betal stories is a great example on Decision Making.
1. Like the king you must speak (equivalent to Decide);  if you do not you are dead as a leader. No one wants to work for an “indecisive” leader

2. Like Vikramaditya, we are carrying baggages (in form of Betal) of past experience. We need to be aware but be willing to get rid of the past experience to make decisions.

3. The context and facts in the stories may not be precise or straight forward where you can apply a formula to get decision. Dealing with vague data is important for making Decisions

All information is incomplete, and all readings distorted by personal prejudice. And yet we have to take decisions all the time and hope the results favour us.
